プロジェクト「Unknown Flame」は、私の父、守田浩一の特異な人生を描いたものです。彼は満州（中国）で日本人開拓移民の両親のもとに生まれ、熊本の農家で育ち、やがて起業家としての夢を追い、日本でラブホテル業界の草分け的な存在となりました。

ラブホテルは、1970年代から1990年代にかけて、恋人たちが家庭の外で過ごすための特別な場所として発展し、独特な建築様式と共に文化的な象徴にもなっていきました。バブル経済の崩壊と共に業界は衰退しましたが、アートブックや映画の中にその時代の遺産が残されています。

このプロジェクトのきっかけは、長年開かれていなかった金庫の中から出てきた、父の若い頃の写真や日記でした。その中の一枚の写真が家族の謎を解き明かし、父の人生について自分がどれだけ知らなかったかに気付かされました。父も80歳を迎え、彼の人生を記録に残す必要性を強く感じるようになりました。

私たちの制作プロセスは、年に一度会う父を撮影し、年齢を重ねる彼の姿や少しずつ明かされる過去を紐解いていくことから始まります。これらの現代のポートレートに加え、父の若い頃の写真やラブホテルのカタログ、彼の書いた文章も組み合わせています。

また、私たちは1990年代初頭に父が建てたラブホテルも訪ねました。このホテルは、父の事業が最も成功していた時期にオープンしましたが、バブル崩壊による経済的な打撃で手放すことになったものです。

現在と過去を織り交ぜながら、父の人生とその時代の文化的背景を浮き彫りにする、そんな作品を目指しています。

ARTIST STATEMENT
Unknown Flame

My project, "Unknown Flame" explores the extraordinary life of my father, Koichi Morita, who was born in Manchuria, China, to Japanese pioneer parents, grew up in rural Kumamoto, Japan, and pursued his entrepreneurial dreams, becoming one of the early developers of love hotels in Japan.

Love hotels, which thrived from the 1970s to the 1990s, are specialized accommodations where lovers can spend time together outside their homes. These hotels became cultural icons with unique architectural styles. Following the bubble economy in Japan, the industry declined, but it left behind a fascinating legacy captured in art books and movies.

The inspiration for this project came from a significant discovery: a long-forgotten safe, unopened for decades, revealed a treasure trove of old photographs and journals from my father's youth. Among these was a photograph that unraveled a family mystery I had always wondered about, prompting me to realize how little I knew of his life's story. At 80 years old, my father’s time is limited, and the urgency to document his journey became clear.

Our creative process involves photographing my father during our annual meetings, capturing his essence as he ages and gradually reveals his past. These contemporary portraits are paired with his archived photos, love hotel catalogs, and writings.

We revisited a love hotel he built in the early 90s. The hotel was opened at the height of his company’s success and was auctioned off when his business took a downward turn due to the Japanese economic crisis.

This collaboration weaves together the present and the past, offering a holistic view of his life and the cultural context of his era.
